Fancy the suit, do you?

26 March 2004 5:43 p.m.
you asked for it

the finishing classes did fuck all for Albert.

look at me when i'm talking to you, please. thank you.

destined for nerdhood academicia?

me = research assistant = confirmed nerd.

hehehe.

well, it pays, so the first thing i'm doing to celebrate is take the month off. oh, alright, i start work in May. hopefully, i'll be done in 2 years.

the interview was hardly what other job interviews are supposed to be like. i know my supervisor-wat. and there was none of that "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" stuff.

bright side - work schedule is up to me.

down side - work schedule is up to me.

i went by the language faculty on the way home just now to stalk sensei to look at my japanese exam results. unfortunately, there was no parking. sod it, i wasn't going to walk in the mid-day sun! i saw the national service kids though. they were waiting beside the road (for the trainers-kot). the poor things looked as though they had been abandoned.

just wondering...

me and my good friend met each other when we went to the same matriculation college, where we discovered that we were from the same neighbourhood (about 2 blocks away from each other).

later on, we applied to the same government university for the same reasons, and got the same government loans, but not for the same course, alright.

i've finished my course, and she's in her penultimate year of study, and we only have this observation to make - why are our siblings going to private colleges and having their fees paid for by our parents?

private colleges are a luxury, no doubt, but this option was never mentioned when we were planning our tertiary studies.

the other thing we have in common is that we are both the eldest (and only) girl in the family. plus, when we bring up the matter, our parents pause, then say, "well, you have a car."

okay.

... really?

you out there. and you and you and you. opinions, please.

public service announcement aka all the freaky stuff only happens when the day has sufficiently warmed up.

there's a vcd copy of Romeo & Juliet out for sale as the secondary schools' literature component .

problem - it's not Franco Zeferelli's version, nor is it Baz Lurhman's (?). it's the one staged by UM (my varsity!!!) a few months ago.

bigger problem - it's not even remotely good. there is no rhythm (is it true Shakespeare wrote in iambic meter? or just iambs?), the accents are all over the place, and so is the acting. the only bright spot is Lady Capulet (i'm sorry, i forgot which is Juliet's surname), and she doesn't appear often enough.

in addition to this, the synopsis on the back of the vcd contains spelling errors. like that how to teach people?!

i know about the vcd cos my mum brought it home after work (she's a school teacher). she's so evil. when the promoters (from UM also) said it was a UM production, she twigged that it was the play i had complained about, and she said, "oh, my daughter saw it. she said it was bad, Juliet cried too much."

their defense - director suruh nangis. (director said to cry)

because it's a 'tragedy of passion'.

NO.

moral - if you, or anyone you know, is planning to buy it for whatever reason, stop them! at the very least, insist on a preview.

my dad on Figo - "he has a very classic Roman warrior type of face-ah, he?"

yeah. i saw the game against Monaco. i found it touching that during the pre-game picture session/line-up, he was reassuring (or soothing) the kid he was taking a picture with, clapping his shoulders-like, and in general being so paternal, my ovaries MELTED.

Serie A...

has to be the best looking footie league there is.

spanish league commentators are in a class of their own. what other commentator would make sounds that simulate orgasm (i think) when watching a striker go for goal?

quote - "ooh ooh ooh... that was a dangerous moment for Casillas there!"

it had to be heard to be believed. okay, i don't know what a guy sounds like when he orgasms.

the following is not a proper commentary -

"Andriy Shevchenko blinds the goalkeeper Molina with his good-lookingness and scores AC Milan's second goal of the night!!!"

this was in the morning paper. it's very sad, even if it's a well-made poster.

have just seen Travis's Love Will Come Through. that song always makes me think of snow falling and windchimes, although i've never seen the former, and didn't understand Charles Dickens's story.

cheeky!

well, it's Kaká, actually. i have no idea how to pronounce it - some commentators say Ka-ka, while some don't. we'll settle for Ricardo, won't we?

adventures from the land of [V]

how nice of The Strokes to make the Reptilia video for myopic so-and-so's like me. all the better to appreciate the guitarist. not Fabrizio, but the pretty-uke-anime hero-wispy-elven looking fella. him. wow.

and also - why ah all the malaysian vj-s got the same presenting style wan? the same way of talking, gesturing, posturing. why? is it stage fright that makes them act from the same template? and just who the hell set that standard anyway? it fucking sucks.

not that i watch HITZ.tv that often, but it's the principle of the matter that matters.

the more i cry, the more i cry...

have you even felt so lethargic and apathetic that even the idea of breathing was unbearably troublesome, and then get mad at yourself because you've been taught that to feel that way is wrong, and yet you do nothing because you're still feeling lethargic and apathetic and the momentary surge of motivation is just that?

and also, the longer you sit in front of the screen or writing pad, the more stuff you end up writing because there's nothing else to do. is this, like, a state of literary zen?

i just heard/saw Melissa Auf Der Mar's debut solo single. i don't think you can actually go wrong with a name that posh.

visually, she looks like a cross between Cate Blanchette and Tori Amos (go figure).

the song, Followed The Waves, sounded like the love child of Massive Attack's Angel and something out of the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, delivered in a style reminiscent of Shirley Manson, which is quite iffy but she carried it off. that's not to say her sound is derivative, okay? she is her own person.

maybe it was the colours in the video (not directed by Meiert Avis of Like A Stone fame) that set the intense mood, because when Maroon 5's This Love came on next, it was like surfacing from the depths of depression (or an ocean, but the two can be interchanged at this point in my life).

i think it's my mood - i'm totally feeling these angsty songs. Nelly Furtado is my best friend when she sings Try.

p.s. to whoever's heard it - doesn't the new Michael Learns to Rock song sound like Wen Bie by Leon Lai (i think)? who the hell is Michael anyway?

p.p.s. - The Rasmus's first single has three different videos to accompany it. why? debate and discuss.

why do you see stray cats everywhere but step in dog shit instead?

my friend came over yesterday. we went for a walk in the park outside my house (yes, i'm that posh). she lives about 2 blocks away but we haven't seen each other in 3 months. she said i looked healthy when she saw me, which should come as a relief for those of you who have seen me and think i need force-feeding. :D

there's this likkle black kitten in the backyard that is ever so cute because it's only a few months old. soon, it will grow up and look like its mother - grizzled, battle-worn, and wary. do black cats always come with yellow eyes?

(i had the idea that black cats come yowling, like other cats do when they come, but that's just me, hahaha)

so... you know how kittens make every thing their plaything?

this one used a flower pot outside the back gate as a lectern. the dried grass in the pot let it an extremely intellectual air. and then it tried to chew through the chain links of the fence.

i was never this entertained while making coffee before!

i'm treading the path of convention!

so i've gone to see my supervisor about a post-grad project. he's the same guy who supervised my honours project, so he was a logical first stop, dontcha think?

also, i was working up the nerve to approach this other lecturer about alternative medicine. i think the topic is interesting, but he scares the hell out of me cos he's so sarcastic. it's one thing to face a sarcastic person, but it's different when you don't know the kind of ground you'll be standing on, e.g. this is a potential pay-master - do i cheek him or not?

no, i don't have the same kind of balls as my friend does.

so, the project the first lecturer has is pretty straightforward (methinks). on one hand it's safe; on the other hand, safe can be boring.

on the other hand, safe is secure, and the daredevil, experimental stuff should be saved for after one has all her degrees and stuff.

why i am diving straight at the first available project? because it's familiar to me.

if i confirm it tomorrow, i have no holiday. if i confirm it on friday, i have 4 days. i have to do literature reviews again (argh). and then i have to play the role of a knowledgeable senior type. and then i will switch to horn-rimmed glasses. and wear high-collared blouses edged with lace and buttoned up to the neck, hohoho.

in the light of my rediscovered inquisitiveness (?), i think i will give Dr Martens another try. wish me luck!
